Not only will they sound an alarm when there is a natural disaster such as an earthquake or volcanic eruption, a nuclear power plant emergency, significant train derailment or chemical spill they will also broadcast terrorist attack information. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has signed an agreement with NOAA (the government agency that oversees the National Weather Service)to provide this information on behalf of public safety. In some states, Weather radios will also be utilized when AMBER alerts are issued. All of these messages are time critical, coming from an official government source.
